Ruto: I used to do 3 campaign rallies as President Uhuru slept

by Enock Ndayala
The battle for the August 9 presidential election is shaping up to what can be termed a two-horse race between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

On Monday, July 4, Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto took his campaigns to Meru County to popularize his hustler manifesto ahead of his titanic battle with Raila Odinga.

The 2022 presidential front-runner used the rallies to comment on the leaked audio suggesting that he almost slapped President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the leaked audio, Ruto was heard telling a delegation of Gikuyu elders that President Uhuru was reluctant on participating in the repeat of presidential polls after the nullification of his re-election by the Supreme Court in 2017.

The former Eldoret North MP accused the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party of capitalizing on the audio to portray him as a dangerous man who cannot be trusted with power yet all he wanted was Uhuru not to give up at the last minute.

He instead explained how he worked hard to ensure that President Uhuru Kenyatta got re-elected in the 2017 General Election.

He revealed that he did most of the campaigns in 2013 and 2017, waking up as early as 4 am, and by the time President Uhuru joined them, he would have done several meetings.

“I used to wake up, hold three campaigns before the president woke up because he was my friend and there is no way I would let Raila take that seat away from him,” William Ruto said.

It is due to this that the former Agriculture Minister said he pushed Uhuru to participate in the repeat of the presidential election because he could not let his efforts go to waste.

“I could not let it go, nilimkaza kweli kweli mpaka akakubali kwa sababu ni rafiki yangu (I pushed him until he agreed because he is my friend),” he added.

The UDA presidential flag bearer further castigated the Azimio team for pretending to be friends with the Head of State when they did nothing to help him ascend to power.

“Where were they when we voted for Uhuru and made him the president? Do they know how we made Uhuru the president?” Ruto posed.
