Ruto settles on Rigathi Gachagua as presidential running mate

After 17- hours of the standoff, Deputy President William Ruto has settled on Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate ahead of the August polls.8

On Sunday, May 15, DP Ruto unveiled Gachagua at his Karen residence after extensive consultation among Kenya Kwanza affiliate parties.

Ruto revealed that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, settled on Gachagua because he is an astute debater, a principled, resilient, and fearless fighter for the right cause.

“I nominate my good friend Rigathi Gachagua to be my running mate in the August 9, 2022, presidential election,” Ruto told a news conference on Sunday.

Ruto revealed that he chose Gachagua from other worthy candidates who made it to the shortlist among them Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, Murang’a Women Representative Alice Wahome, and Speaker Justin Muturi.

The DP further said that he will sign an executive order immediately after he gets into the office that will outline the roles of the deputy president.

“The DP under Kenya Kwanza will perform real duty as assigned to him by the president. My deputy and I have agreed when it is time to leave we will leave and we will mentor other leaders in Kenya Kwanza formation,” DP Ruto said.

In his acceptance speech, Gachagua said, “this is the biggest day in my life and I truly thank you our Deputy President for the trust and confidence you have bestowed on me.” Gachagua said.

“Thank you, for your excellency. I will not let you down, I will not let the hustler nation down and I will not let Kenyans down.” He added.

Yesterday there was intense speculation about Ruto’s running mate, following news of a standoff as to who between Gachagua and Senator Kithure Kindiki is suitable to deputize Ruto.
