Deputy President Wiliam Ruto has dismissed Mt Kenya Foundation’s move to endorse Raila Odinga for Presidency in 2022.

Speaking during a burial in Nyeri County on September 29, Ruto questioned why it is now considered okay for the rich to meet and discuss how to protect their wealth but when the poor meet, it is considered an incitement to class war.

The deputy president said people should not think when the hustlers meet, they are planning to fight the rich, instead, they are also discussing how to improve the economic well-being.

“It will be wrong for anyone to think that doing the same with those who do not have in order to help them create wealth is tantamount to inciting a class war,” William Ruto explained.

The Deputy President argued that meeting the less fortunate will enable the government also help them to create wealth.

William Ruto’s criticism comes after the Mount Kenya Foundation(MKF), which brings together wealthy businessmen from Mt Kenya region, held a meeting as part of plans to consider endorsing Raila Odinga for presidency.

In the meeting held on September 28, the tycoons from Mt Kenya region said President Uhuru Kenyatta had tasked them with finding his suitable successor.

It came at a time the ODM leader has been part of politicians accusing William Ruto of trying to incite the ordinary Kenyans against the rich as part of his hustler narrative– political messaging which appeals to the poor.

Ruto thus believes it is ironic for a group of wealthy men to meet and appear to want to control who becomes president but when he does the same with ordinary Kenyans, it is claimed he is inciting them to fight the rich.

In the meeting with Raila, the wealthy Mt Kenya businessmen revealed plans to hold similar discussions with One Kenya Alliance members including; Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Gideon Moi, and Moses Wetangula.

“We will listen to all candidates; today we have started with Raila, on Friday we will come back here to hear from the OKA team,” MKF vice-chairTitus Ibui said.

The meeting has sparked reactions from members of DP William Ruto’s camp.

According to former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, Raila Odinga is being played by the Mt Kenya tycoons claiming to have endorsed him.

“If It is true that they want to back him, why would they say they will make a decision after listening to his so-called co-principals?” Boni Khalwale posed.

On her part, Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba argued that the Mount Kenya Foundation does not represent the view of people from the central region.
