Ruto’s Jacaranda rally temporarily stopped by tear gas

by Amos Khaemba

Deputy President William Ruto’s rally at Jacaranda ground on Sunday, January 16, 2022, was temporarily disrupted by rowdy youths who were seen throwing items to the crowd.

Riot police officers who had been deployed to restore order were forced to fire tear gas canisters in the air in order to disperse the rowdy youths.

The incident did not however stop the DP’s meeting as the rally proceeded as planned with his allies accusing their political opponents of having a hand in the ugly scenes.

Speaking at the rally, later, a visibly angry William Ruto aimed at ODM leader Raila Odinga accusing him of being behind the attempts to scuttle his rally.

Ruto accused Raila of using fear and intimidation as a way of winning the forthcoming General Election.

“I am telling the master of violence, don’t waste your time threatening us, am beyond fear. A man who commits treason in his own country pretends that he can threaten somebody,” an agitated Ruto said in reference to Raila.

“Don’t waste your time trying to sell fear to us, we have told you we are not buying threats and intimidation,” Ruto said.

Ruto’s comments were seen as a direct response to Raila’s statement at the Thika rally where he promised to take thieves to ‘Kamiti’ if he wins the election.

Ruto cautioned youths not to be used by politicians to disrupt opponents’ meetings instead they should tell such politicians to use their family members.

“Don’t accept to be used by anyone who gives you money so that you fight your fellow Kenyan. Don’t accept to be used to throw stones. Tell them to use their family members to go and throw stones,” Ruto said.
