Tension has continued to plague the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the deaths of some of its staff.

On Monday, August 22, Gichugu constituency returning officer Geoffrey Gitubo collapsed and died in Nanyuki.

Confirmed reports say that Gitobu collapsed and died outside the IEBC offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia County. He is believed to have had issues with his health.

The IEBC official was reportedly visiting his family in Nanyuki but had gone to the IEBC offices to print some documents.

“I had sent him to pass by our office in Nanyuki to photocopy for me some documents,

“It is at that point that he collapsed while at the office and was pronounced dead at one of the private health facilities within Nanyuki in which he was rushed,” County returning officer Jane Gitonga told the Star.

Gitonga further said the cause of the death of the 57-year-old is yet to be established but stated that a postmortem would be better placed to reveal the death cause.

This came just days after returning officer Daniel Musyoka that was in charge of the Embakasi East constituency, was murdered.

The body of Musyoka was found by herders dumped in Loitoktok after he was reported missing on Thursday, August 11.

Loitoktok police boss Kipruto Ruto confirmed that the body of the slain IEBC staff showed signs of struggle and torture but no documents were recovered from the scene.

On Monday, August 22, the International Human Rights condemned the ongoing intimidation, attack, and threats meted against IEBC officials and demanded reinforcement of security for IEBC members.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this attack and any kind of violence,

“We demand to reinforce the security of the members of the Supreme Court, IEBC, presidency, presidency-elect, and head of the opposition. we call for calm and peaceful coexistence,” the International Human Rights said.
