Section of Mt Kenya leaders meet hours after William Ruto tour of the region

A section of the vote-rich Mt Kenya leaders on Monday, September 6, met just hours after William Ruto’s tour of the highly publicised tour of the region.

William Ruto’s tour of the region on Sunday, September 5, was slightly interrupted along the way before he addressed rallies across several constituencies after which he received a heroic welcome in Githurai estate, Kiambu.

The meeting that was held at a Nairobi hotel brought together The Service party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri, Martha Karua (Narc Kenya), Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege among others.

While the finer details of the meeting remain scanty, reports suggest the leaders are said to have discussed a pre-election deal ahead of the 2022 General Election.

But Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua said that the leaders mainly discussed issues of unity of purpose especially after two groups clashed over the weekend.

“Enjoying tea with like-minded parties and some members of parliament from Mt Kenya discussing issues of unity of purpose,” she said in a Tweet.

Mt Kenya region might not present a presidential candidate for the first time since the onset of multiparty democracy in the early 1990s.

Politicians from the region are thus trying to strategise on how they can be part of the next government after 2022 elections.

The meeting comes barely hours after a convoy of Deputy President heading to Kieni for church service was met with resistance after a group of youths heckled the team by the roadside.

It is believed that Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega’s supporters’ clashed with William Ruto’s sympathisers’ chanting President Uhuru as their leader.

Although the clash appeared to be between William Ruto and Kanini Kega, it is no doubt that the clashes were basically between President Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto since Kega is a strong defender of the first in command.

The hostility in Nyeri comes barely a week after Uhuru and the his deputy exchanged words in public confirming their deteriorated relationship.

This saw the Head of State challenge his deputy to resign instead of attacking the government from within.

Three weeks ago, Karua and Kiunjuri held a meeting with seven parties from Mt Kenya and committed to unite the region which appears to be split between the Kieleweke (allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Handshake) and Tanga Tanga (allied to William Ruto).
