Siaya governor on spot for not supporting Raila’s presidential dreams

by Enock Ndayala

Siaya Senator James Orengo has accused the outgoing Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga of too much pre-occupation with local politics instead of supporting ODM leader Raila Odinga’s State House bid.

Rasanga whose two-term constitutional limit as the county boss comes to an end in August 2022 has expressed interest to unseat Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi.

But Orengo, who has expressed interest to succeed Siaya Governor in the 2022 elections has asked Rasanga to join other governors serving their final term in popularising former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who is expected to give a fifth stab at the presidency.

“I want Rasanga to join forces with other second-term governors to pull their resources and synergies to campaign for Raila,” Orengo told the People Daily.

According to lawyer Orengo, while other ODM second term governors are busy selling their party leader Raila Odinga, Rasanga is on the other side meeting grass-root leader in Alego Usonga constituency to drum up for his support for the parliamentary seat.

He argued that if Senator Orengo wants him to play national politics and support Raila then the constituency seat was the best platform.

“If they want me at the national arena, then Alego–Usonga people will take me there. I am not retiring from politics any time soon,” Rasanga said.

Orengo’s sentiments come barely days after the senator was advised not to go for the gubernatorial position in the 2022 General Election as he is better playing at a ‘bigger stage.

ODM deputy party leader and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya pleaded with Orengo to maintain his place at the national stage as he will be useful to the party as Raila Odinga gives his fifth attempt at the presidency.

“Orengo needs to be closer to the party, closer to Baba (Raila Odinga), he should be closer to us as we go up there to the national level,” Oparanya said.
