Suna East MP Junet Mohammed’s influence in ODM causing divisions

by Nderi Caren

There is division in ODM Party due to the rising influence of Suna East MP, Junet Mohammed, and his closeness to party leader Raila Odinga.

His presence and influence have caused division in ODM, within members allied to Raila Odinga, and those allied to presidential hopeful Jimi Wanjigi.

Being the Minority whip in the National Assembly, June has raised his political profile so high that he is the only opposition MPs who won the trust of President Uhuru to be part of promoters of the Building Bridges initiative.

He has caused division in ODM, with some members accusing him of arrogance and abusing his closeness to the Party leader, Raila Odinga.

On the other hand, his political critics in his home county, Migori are accusing Junet Mohammed of focusing on National politics and forgetting his mandate as the Suna East MP.

The local professionals in ODM, who are siding with billionaire businessman Jimi Wanjigi are seeking to unseat Junet Mohammed in the 2022 General Election.

“The main issue here is that the people of Suna East are not happy with Junet. He is never at home to serve the constituents,

“Of great concern, he does not take criticism, he is ever demeaning people and using his closeness to Raila to intimidate people,” Gad Awonda one of the 2022 Suna East parliamentary contestants told People Daily.

Awonda, and other contestants of the Suna East Parliamentary seat were hosted by presidential hopeful Jimi Wanjigi recently.

Junet Mohammed’s opponents were not impressed by a recent visit of Raila Odinga to the MPs home, that was a purported endorsement.

Those seeking to unseat Junet include environmentalist Amimo Adongo, businessmen Bruno Liende and Odipo Jasweta, publisher and educator Hezron Onyango and Nairobi County Ward Rep Elias Otieno.

“Let no one claim that we are fighting Raila because there has emerged a trend that if you decide to contest where some Raila allies are incumbents, a narrative is crafted that the ODM leader is being fought,” Amimo Adongo said.
