The six Women leaders in William Ruto’s camp eyeing gubernatorial seats in 2022

by Enock Ndayala

There has been an increase in the number of women leaders in Kenya eyeing the gubernatorial seat in the 2022 General Election.

In the 2013 General Election, most women warmed up to Woman Representative positions, and no woman was elected as a governor.

However, this changed in 2017 when the late Joyce Laboso (Bomet) Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), and Charity Ngilu (Kitui) clinched gubernatorial seats.

As the 2022 General Election draws closer, more women, including those in DP Ruto’s camp are flexing muscles for gubernatorial seats.

1.    Susan Kihika

Susan Wakarura Kihika is a Kenyan lawyer and politician, who is the current Senator for Nakuru County. She was elected to that position in 2017.

“But definitely I’m going for the governorship,” Kihika declared.

Kihika and Kinyanjui were elected to their respective posts in 2017 on Jubilee Party tickets, but have since fallen apart due to the emergence of political factions in the ruling party.

Her announcement sets stage for a heated contest pitting several other interested parties against Kinyanjui who will be looking to defend his seat.

Nakuru firebrand politician James Mungai and Chama Cha Mashinani’s Peter Koros are other gubernatorial aspirants eying to unseat Kinyanjui.

2.    Aisha Jumwa

Jumwa is the only woman who has expressed interest in the long queue of aspirants who seek to take over Kilifi County when Amason Kingi’s second term lapses in August 2022.

She said she will launch an insurmountable campaign against the men on Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance.

“I started from the certificate level, and I now hold a degree. I’m ready to go for the governor seat,” Jumwa told a Mombasa-based radio show in June 2021.

She fell out with her party ODM and joined Ruto’s camp after attempts to form a regional party fell through.

Jumwa is expected to battle with Devolution CAS Gideon Mung’aro and Kenyan envoy to Tanzania Dan Kazungu, Kilifi speaker Jimmy Kahindi, and former Labour CS Kazungu Kambi.

Others in the race are Magarini MP Michael Kingi, former Kilifi Agriculture chief officer Baha Nguma and Dzombo Mbaru while Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo has remained tight-lipped over his next move but his supporters believe he might toss his hat in the ring.

Jumwa, Mung’aro, Kahindi, and Kazungu have been feted as the front-runners.
