Too late? kalonzo Musyoka wants to leave Raila Odinga camp

by Amos Khaemba

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is headed to the High Court seeking orders to cut ties with the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition ahead of the August polls.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, May 15, Makueni MP Dan Maanzo, a close ally of the Wiper leader said that the party had decided to cut political ties with the ODM leader after failed negotiation to have Kalonzo deputize Raila in the August election.

Maanzo revealed that the Wiper National Executive Committee (NEC) met on Saturday evening and unanimously agreed that Kalonzo should exit from the coalition to vie for the presidency.

“The agreement of Azimio-OKA has legal issues and we are approaching the High court tomorrow morning so that the court can guide the political parties correctly and we will be able to prove to the courts that the current agreement is illegal and unconstitutional,” Maanzo said.

“We have been negotiating for days now but Raila Odinga appears to be rigid and we have no options other than part ways,” he added.

Kalamazoo maker revealed that the former Vice President’s name was already forwarded to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission before the formation of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya and Wiper had never officially withdrawn his candidature.

According to Maanzo, the Wiper leader will be naming his running mate before the deadline in the event the ODM leader fails to pick him as his running mate.

But even as Kalonzo’s party seek to disengage from the Azimio coalition, the agreement signed by the 26 constituent parties provides tough conditions for any party seeking to leave.

Article 22(1) of the agreement complicates the exit of any constituent party, with a requirement for a 90-day notice to the coalition council chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta to effect such a withdrawal.

Such an exit request cannot be made 6 months before the general election or within three months after the August 9th polls.

Political analysts opine that the only option for Kalonzo is for him to run as an independent candidate which he is also behind schedule.
