On Tuesday, August 2, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta was in Bungoma County to drum up support for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga.

Uhuru announced a KSh 500 million bailout package for the Nzoia Sugar factory to offset arrears owed to farmers and workers.

The outgoing president directed the debt-ridden Nzoia Sugar Factory to resume production on Sunday, August 7 in what many would consider goodies to have the region vote for his preferred successor, Raila Odinga.

He further directed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya to ensure KSh 450 million owed to cane farmers is credited to their bank accounts.

But in a statement on Wednesday, August 3, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi took a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta for apparently dishing goodies to the Western region.

Mudavadi, a principal in The Kenya Kwanza Alliance led by William Ruto, said Uhuru’s goodies will not sway the Luhya votes back to Raila Odinga.

Mudavadi said voters from the region had already made up their minds and that their support for UDA presidential candidate William Ruto is intact.

“Mr. President, your visit to western in the final week of your tenure, with purported goodies is a ploy the people of the region will not buy. It’s clear the region has been at the bottom of your priority list and therefore the region’s resolve to vote for William Ruto is cemented!” Mudavadi said in a Tweet.

While in Bungoma, the outgoing Head of State urged Kenyans to vote for his handshake partner stating that Raila has proved to be a genuine leader who has the interests of Kenyans at heart.

“Old age is not a disease, what is important is a person who has the people at heart, a person with humility, a man who is not interested in chasing money and other people’s wives,” President Uhuru said.
