The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has finally released the number of voters eligible to vote in the August 9, General Election.
The electoral commission has captured 1,031,645 new voters in its second National Enhance continuous Voter Registration exercise that came to an end on February 6, 2022.
In a statement on Monday, February 7, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the exercise which took place in 1,450 County Assembly Wards, institutions of higher learning, and Huduma Centers countrywide missed its target for a second time.
The commission attributed low numbers to voter apathy and national ID-related issues.
In the first phase of the drive that ran for one month ending November 5, last year, the IEBC listed 1.51 million new voters, translating to about 25.3 percent of its target of six million voters.
In its second National Enhance continuous Voter Registration exercise that came to an end on February 6, 2022, the commission managed to capture 1,032,645 new voters.
A spot-check by Kivumbi.co.ke identified the top 20 counties with the highest number of voters.
Nairobi has the highest number of voters standing at 2,505,199 up from 2,250,853 in 2017 while Kiambu comes in second at 1,293,309 from 1,180,920 voters in the last General Election.
Nakuru came third with 1,050,367 whereas Kakamega and Meru closed the top five spot with 841,139 and 780, 858 respectively.
