Tukutane kwa debe: Johnson Sakaja’s fake degree case dismissed

by Amos Khaemba

The United Democratic Alliance Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja’s fake degree case has dominated headlines over the past few weeks.

A petition had been filed before the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee accusing Sakaja of fraudulently acquiring a degree from a Ugandan institution, Team University

At one point the youthful politician roped in President Uhuru Kenyatta accusing him of being behind attempts to block him from the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

However, on Sunday, June 19, Sakaja got a reprieve after the IEBC tribunal dismissed the petition challenging the validity of his degree certificate.

In the eagerly awaited ruling, the committee said it lacks jurisdiction to determine the authenticity of Sakaja’s academic documents.

Speaking after the verdict, Sakaja, a close ally of the Deputy President William Ruto was opportunistic in securing victory in the August polls.

“I’m glad that we have been vindicated, we stand qualified, we have the requisite qualifications to run for the office of governor of Nairobi. “We are in it to win so that we can transform this great city of ours,” Sakaja said.

“So we shall continue with our campaigns in earnest, we shall continue talking to the people of Nairobi,” he added.

Sakaja will now face off with Polycarp Igathe of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party in the August election.

Even though Sakaja has been cleared, the Commission of University Education(CUE) has opened a probe into the authenticity of Sakaja’s degree following concerns raised by members of the public.

The commission has demanded that Sakaja avails several documents among them; an application letter for the course he took at the university, his letter of admission, evidence of registration, official transcripts, examination schedules, and a graduation booklet with his name on it among other requirements.

After Sakaja was cleared by IEBC on June 6, reports emerged that the degree he provided was not legitimate as there were no records to indicate he attended the said University.
