There was drama at the Milimani Law Courts on Thursday, December 9, after Jubilee party sponsor alias tycoon Wambui wa Ruto at center of KSh 2.2 billion tax evasion case threatened to shoot journalists.

Confirmed reports say that Mary Wambui Mungai threatened to pull the trigger at journalists who were recording proceedings at the precincts of the Milimani Law Courts moments after she was released.

It is reported that the persistence of the members of the fourth estate to pursue her angered her more, resorting to issuing threats in presence of five police officers who were escorting her from the courtroom.

On Thursday, December 9, the Jubilee party sponsor presented herself at the Milimani anti-corruption court to plead to charges of KSh 2.5 billion tax evasion.

Wambui and her daughter Purity Mungai, the Directors of Purma Holdings Limited had been on the run for one week after being summoned to appear before the Kenya Revenue Authority on December 3.

The two surrendered at the court upon learning that the men in blue uniform were spiritedly pursuing them after the court issued a warrant arrest when they failed to appear voluntarily to take a plea.

The duo denied eight counts of knowingly and unlawfully omitting taxes due in the income tax returns submitted to the Commissioner for Domestic Taxes for the period between 2014 to 2016.

“On or before June 30, 2015, in Nairobi County being a limited liability company registered as a taxpayer and its directors; knowingly and unlawfully omitted from the company’s income tax returns Ksh2,231,789,125 an amount which should have been included in the income tax returns submitted to the commissioner for the year of income 2014,” read part of the charge sheet.

They were released on a cash bail of Ksh25 billion each after a spirited legal battle between their lawyer, Nelson Havi, and the prosecution.
