Uganda President Yoweri Museveni apologises over son’s provocative tweets

Earlier this week, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni’s son Muhoozi Kainerugaba repeatedly threatened on Twitter to invade Kenya’s capital city Nairobi.

Kainerugaba, in a series of tweets, said on Monday, October 2, that the Ugandan army could breach Kenya’s territorial sovereignty with ease by capturing Nairobi.

“It wouldn’t take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture Nairobi,” Kainerugaba wrote drawing angry reactions from Kenyans on social media.

However, on Wednesday, October 5, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni apologized to the Kenyan government over his son’s provocative tweets.

In a statement to Kenya’s President William Ruto, Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving Head of State said his son acted negatively as a public officer.

“I ask our Kenyan brothers and sisters to forgive us for tweets sent by General Muhoozi, former Commander of Land Forces here, regarding the election matters in that great country.  It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries,” Museveni said.

“Very sorry, ndugu zetu  Wakenya (My Kenyan brothers).    Also sorry to the Ugandans who could have been annoyed by one of their officials meddling in the affairs of brother Kenya. He (General Muhoozi) has acted negatively as a Public officer,” he added.

Museveni further defended the recent promotion of his elder son Muhoozi Kaneirugaba from the rank of Lieutenant to the rank of full General.

He termed his son as a “passionate Pan-Africanist” saying there are positive contributions Muhoozi made and that he is capable of making more contributions not only for Uganda but for the East Africa Community bloc.

“However, many other positive contributions the General has made and can still make,” Museveni said.
