Uganda strongman Yoweri Museveni hints he’ll retire in 2026

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has hinted that he will not contest for the presidency in 2026.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has hinted that he will retire to go look after his cows when his current term ends in the next 5 years.

Speaking during the launch of a vaccine facility attended by DP William Ruto on July 6, Yoweri Museveni said that he is ready to retire from politics.

Having held power for 35 years, the Uganda strongman noted that he has for a long time hoped to retire, but was held back by the creation of the East African Federation.

“Please you, people. I want to go and look after my cows. Create a center of gravity, I push you there, then I go and look after my cows,

“I am very glad that His Excellency Ruto and other Kenyan and East African leaders support this idea,” Yoweri Museveni remarked during the occasion.

The Ugandan president was responding to DP Ruto’s request to him, saying that he owes East Africa a lot before retirement.

“You owe us a debt. Before you retire and if possible in the next two or three years, you owe us the fruition of the East Africa federation,

“We are here as leaders and citizens of East Africa to support you and other leaders in the region to eliminate barriers that impede trade, investment, labor, and people working together,” Ruto told Yoweri Museveni.

On May 13, 2021 the Ugandan President took the oath of office for the 6th time after winning the General Election held in January 2021.

He cliched the presidency seat after a tough face-off with his main opponent Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

Museveni’s swearing installed for months because Bobi Wine had contested the results of the election.
