Uhuru banks on James Orengo’s brilliance to win BBI bill appeal

by Enock Ndayala

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta is confident Siaya Senator James Orengo’s legal prowess will give the pro-BBI bill team victory at the Court of Appeal.

Speaking on Sunday, May 30, Uhuru who is on a three-day state visit to the Nyanza region wondered how pro-BBI team could lose such a simple case when they had the most experienced lawyers, including James Orengo.

“What is before us will be sorted out. I am sure if we have lawyers like James Orengo, we cannot be defeated. Can we really?” President Uhuru posed.

Uhuru went on to say that a referendum will be held before the next year’s General Election as scheduled.

The Head of State further denied allegations that constitutional amendments proposed by the BBI bill are aimed at benefiting him and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

“BBI bill is not helping Raila and his family or Uhuru. BBI is meant to help all Kenyans, to ensure all including those in the villages, get development no matter the government of the day,” he said.

Kivumbi.co.ke understands that a judgment by a five-judge bench delivered on May 13, declared the BBI process illegal, unconstitutional null, and void.

Uhuru’s sentiments come barely days after former prime minister Raila Odinga assured his supporters that the BBI Reggae is still on.

Religious leaders recently called on the leaders to suspend the referendum process, saying it would be better for the nation to hold a referendum after the next General Election.

The call by clergy to postpone the planned referendum was echoed by Deputy President William Ruto who extended an olive branch to Uhuru and Raila over their political differences.
