President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term has not been a smooth one as he has had to shove aside some of his former friends and brought close people who were previously considered enemies.

His handshake with opposition leader Raila Odinga was the genesis of the strained relationship between him and some of his inner circle who were instrumental in ensuring he remains in office.

Kivumbi.co.ke looks at how 7 close allies of the President have turned out to be his critics after their political disagreements.

During campaign periods leading to the 2013 and 2017 general election, Uhuruto duo seemed inseparable. The two showed unity as they donned resembling clothes, walked into studios to take pictures and record videos while giggling like fraternal twins.

Just after Raila Odinga came into the picture in the March 2018 handshake, the duo started experiencing a strained relationship.

Ruto said that the President changed his preferences and chose to work with their former enemies instead of him. In an interview with Citizen TV’s Linus Kaikai, the DP admitted that there is a strained relationship between then and Uhuru had delegated some of his duties to Raila Odinga and Interior CS Fred Matiangi.

In 2017, Kiujuri had an ambition to become Laikipia’s Governor but Uhuru asked him to quit from the contest so that he joins his Cabinet.

The former CS agreed to step down from the gubernatorial race, only to be sacked years later by the man he sacrificed his ambitions for.

Kiunjuri has since then made friendship with DP Ruto and launched his own political party, named The Service Party.

The former Digital Communications Director at the Office of the President has been reduced to a ‘pig farmer’ after a fallout with his boss.

Since then, Itumbi has embarked to rendering his skills to DP William Ruto’s hustler camp. The renowned blogger now leads communications in Ruto’s camp, and also declared himself a pig farmer.

4. Kabando wa Kabando

The former Mukurweini MP was a close ally of Uhuru but now, he criticizes him publicly. Kabando says that Uhuru has forgotten his long political journey and failed to recognize the people who made Jubilee party to be strong.

The two had a political history but their relationship is now sour, with Kuria publicly criticizing Uhuru. The two are set to face off in the Juja by-elections where Uhuru has a candidate on Jubilee ticket, with Kuria fronting one on PDP ticket.

Since joining Ruto’s Tanga Tanga camp, Gachagua has been a big critic of president Uhuru. He has been a pillar for Ruto as he is always on the forefront in organizing and leading his rallies in the Mt Kenya region.

He was a close ally of Uhuru, being one of the powerful lawyers who represented him at ICC in 2008. Their friendship stretched upto the 2017 general election, but could not survive the storm afterwards.

His support for DP William Ruto saw led to his ouster from the Deputy Speaker position at the Senate.

It is said that through supporting Ruto, Kindiki had shown interest in deputizing him in the 2022 polls.
