Uhuru’s cousin insists speaker Justin Muturi shall be president’s voice

Kikuyu elder Kung’u Muigai, who is Uhuru Kenyatta’s cousin has reiterated speaker Justin Muturi will be the voice of the president in Mt Kenya region.

Muigai, who was among the elders who crowned the National Assembly speaker as the regional spokesperson amid uproar from a section of Mt Kenya leaders says that Muturi will take over from Uhuru next year.

He acknowledged that Uhuru is still the spokesperson, only that he will now be speaking through Justin Muturi.

According to the National council of elder’s patron, the journey to coronate Muturi did not end at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine on May 22.

There is a fresh plan to take him to a shrine in Mt.Kenya forest where he will be endorsed as the region’s supreme political leader.

“After the process is complete Muturi will be the Mt.Kenya supremo speaking on behalf of the whole community. But when the president visits the region, Muturi will bow to him,” Muigai said on Saturday.

“We will be sending him to the president and getting information from the Head of State through him.”

Muigai’s assurance comes at a time when Muturi’s position in the National Assembly is at great risk because of his coronation.

A section of MPs are contemplating an impeachment motion on the speaker, and he has dared them to ‘bring it on.’

“There is no impeachment of the speaker. The only option is for the Parliament to pass a vote of no confidence. We have the rules that are supposed to be followed and they are open. Whoever will hit the threshold should try,” Muturi told the press on Sunday.

His coronation has led to political division in Mt Kenya region. A group led by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and her Muranga counterpart Mwangi wa Iria downplayed Muturi’s coronation.

On June 4, Kikuyu elders from Murang’a held a cleansing ceremony at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine.

They termed Muturi’s earlier coronation there as an impurification of the holly sanctuary.
