Sri Lanka is battling its worst economic downturn since independence in 1948 as the government appeals to the International Monetary Fund to bail out its ailing economy.

Record inflation, acute shortage of basic foodstuffs, and constant power outages in the Island nation have sparked a wave of public anger since April 2022.

Protestors have been calling for the resignation of the country’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaska, and the entire government for failing to arrest the deteriorating economy of the country.

On Sunday, protestors stormed the presidential palace in Sri Lanka’s capital city of Janadhipathi Mawatha, Colombo.

The president had to flee as protestors took over his residence with videos showing most of the predominantly youthful protestors playing in the president’s massive bed.

Others are seen ransacking his closet and holding up what looks like the country’s Head of State’s underwear, dark blue in colour.

Sri Lanka’s economic downturn began during the Covid-19 pandemic which struck the country’s biggest revenue earner, tourism.

Sri Lanka situation has been made worse by the global economic downturn occasioned, largely, by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Government forces have been battling anti-government protestors for the better part of 2022 with thousands getting injured and at least one civilian reportedly killed by anti-riot police.

At one point the country’s Stock Exchange suspended trading as each listed company’s share price tumbled.

IMF in April opened talks with the Island nation for a bail-out loan but demanded it restructures its borrowing approach which is dominated by Chinese loans.
