Wangui Ngirici withdraws election petition against Waiguru

by Enock Ndayala

Last month, former Kirinyaga woman representative Wangui Ngirici filed a petition challenging the re-election of Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru.

In her petition filed at the Kerugoya High Court, the Kirinyaga gubernatorial candidate in the August 9, elections stated that the results were manipulated to favor Anne Waiguru.

However, on Wednesday, October 5, Ngirici applied to withdraw a petition she had filed challenging Anne Waiguru’s victory in the Kirinyaga governorship contest.

Through her lawyer, Brian Khaemba, Ngirici told the Kerugoya High Court that said she withdrew the case after consultations with her own team as well as the UDA party.

“After serious soul searching and wide consultation with my supporters and UDA and Kenya Kwanza leadership, I have resolved to withdraw the petition challenging Governor Waiguru’s victory,” Ngirici said.

Ngirici, who ran as an independent candidate after failing to clinch the UDA party ticket in the nomination said the move was aimed at serving the full advantage of the people of Kirinyaga.

“I have decided to take a bold step; one that does not serve to advantage me or disorganize and disenfranchise the Governor but one that serves the full advantage to the people of Kirinyaga,” she said.

Governor Anne Waiguru’s spouse Kamotho Waiganjo welcomed the withdrawal of the case, saying Kirinyaga constituents would now be served fully without any interruptions.

In the polls, Waiguru was declared the winner after garnering 113,088 votes, followed by Ngirici with 105,667 votes. Charles Kiburi came a distant third with 22,065 votes.

It is worth noting that Waiguru who is serving her second term defeated Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua in 2017, election.

Dissatisfied with the results, Karua contested Waiguru’s win a case that proceeded all the way to the Supreme Court of Kenya.
