William Kabogo narrates how he made William Ruto popular in Mt Kenya

by Nderi Caren

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has taken credit for making Deputy President William Ruto popular in Mt Kenya region.

During an interview on October 31, Kabogo said that he advised William Ruto to reach out to voters on his own, and not bank on the  ‘Kumi yangu-Kumi ya Ruto’ promise made by Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 campaigns.

William Kabogo said that he knew the only way to make William Ruto popular in Mt Kenya is to have him make physical tours.

“If you want our votes, work for them, I told William Ruto four years ago that he would not get votes in Mt Kenya region just because we told him so. He should go out and look for votes. Do you see how is running, he is searching,” Kabogo said.

Kabogo argued that he taught William Ruto not to ride on President Uhuru’s position as the Mt Kenya kingpin, but instead seek his own popularity.

Years down the line, William Ruto stands out as the most popular 2022 Presidential candidate in the Mt Kenya region.

A recent survey conducted by Mizani Africa showed that William Ruto was the most preferred candidate in the region.

58.2 percent of Mt Kenya residents said they will vote for a William Ruto presidency if the 2022 polls are now.

Raila Odinga came second as 27.1 percent of residents said they would vote for him if the General Election is held now.

Aware of his popularity in the Mt Kenya region, William Ruto told his political opponents to talk to him if they want access to the Mountain.

“I am welcoming them to the mountain but as they come, let them know that mlima ina wenyeji (Mt Kenya has its owners). When they were away, I made several tours to the region, we built roads and initiated other development projects,” Ruto said.
