On Sunday, July 3, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed publicly played an audio recording of Deputy President William Ruto admitting to almost slapping President Uhuru Kenyatta in State House.

In the leaked audio clip, the UDA presidential flag bearer William Ruto was heard saying that he restrained himself because of the respect he had for his now-estranged boss.

The controversial sound clip which was allegedly taken on Friday, July 1, at DP Ruto’s Karen residence during a meeting with Kikuyu elders raised sharp reactions with netizens questioning its authenticity since all those who attended the meeting left their phones out of the meeting.

Speaking in Kithirune, Central Imenti, in Meru County on Monday, July 4, the deputy president confirmed that he pushed his boss to participate in the repeat poll

While blasting the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition team for leaking the audio, unapologetic Ruto said that there was no way he was going to let Raila Odinga take the presidency away from Uhuru.

“I heard you have an audio of how I pushed Uhuru. You wanted President Uhuru to leave the presidency which we had worked so hard for so that he can get it. We woke at 4 am to vote for him so that he could be the president.”

The 2022 presidential front-runner said he had campaigned so hard for Uhuru in the build-up to the dramatic 2017 presidential election and would not have allowed his efforts to go down the drain.

“I used to wake up, hold three campaigns before the president woke up because he was my friend and there is no way I would let Raila take that seat away from him,” Ruto said.
