United States-based lawyer Makau Mutua has advised Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto to drop his presidential bid and vie for Nairobi gubernatorial seat instead.
Mutua, who had earlier on said that neither a Kalenjin nor a Kikuyu should be president in 2022, urged William Ruto not to waste his resources campaigning for a political seat he is going to lose.
The ever tweeting-lawyer, an ardent supporter of ODM leader Raila Odinga said it will be hard for the deputy president to defeat President Uhuru Kenyatta’s secret successor.
“Instead of running all over the country for an election he’s going to lose, why can’t William Ruto go for Governor of Nairobi? He might just win it!” Mutua said in a Tweet.
But Speaking in Kajiado County on Sunday, October 31, the deputy president exuded confidence that he will succeed retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta and asked the government to provide a fair ground for every candidate ahead of his 2022 battle with Raila Odinga.
“The contest must be free of blackmail, threats, and intimidation. Fear is a sin. We cannot buy it. Kenyans will only buy issues,” William Ruto said.
Mutua’s remarks come barely days after outspoken Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria predicted a landslide win for Raila Odinga against his perceived closest competitor William Ruto in 2022.
Kuria said even though William Ruto is likely to defeat the former premier in Mt Kenya region with a slight margin, the few votes Raila will get in president Uhuru’s backyard will be substantial enough for him to win the presidency with a landslide.
According to Moses Kuria’s projection, Raila will get more than 52 percent of the total votes cast while William Ruto will get a mere 47 percent in the whole country if the contest will be a two-horse race as analysts have predicted.
