William Ruto asks Raila to promise he’ll accept 2022 election results

by Amos Khaemba

Deputy President William Ruto has challenged ODM leader Raila Odinga to commit that he will accept the August 9 General Election if he loses the presidential election.

Speaking during UDA public rally at Kangundo town in Machakos County on Thursday, January 20, Ruto called on the former prim minister to conduct peaceful campaigns during and after elections.

“When they lose the August 9, election, they must commit that they will accept the verdict of the people of Kenya, and that they will not swear themselves in, that they will not organize demonstrations. They will not cause violence; they will pack their small bags and leave,” Ruto said in an indirect reference to Raila Odinga.

The second in command said that Kenyans want peaceful elections and that nobody will force them to make voting decisions.

“The ODM leader (Raila Odinga) must disown violence. He cannot continue to give excuses about violence,” DP Ruto said.

Ruto urged Kenyans not to allow themselves to be divided because of political differences.

“We want Kenyans to unite and work together and form a government that will serve everybody,” Ruto added.

The Deputy President said leaders and supporters of the hustler movement will not succumb to threats, blackmail, and intimidation employed by their detractors to manage the country’s politics.

Recently DP Ruto’s rallies have witnessed instances of violence, in which he has accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of orchestrating them.

Last Sunday, January 16, youths attempted to disrupt William Ruto’s rally at Jacaranda ground in Nairobi.

Orange Democratic Movement party distanced itself from the violence accusing Ruto of stage-managing the violence.

“Violence has been part and parcel of Ruto’s brand of politics right from the time he introduced himself to Kenyans through the YK92. Other than the use of money to buy support, violence is Ruto’s main tool for political ascendance,” ODM said in response to Ruto’s accusation.
