Deputy President William Ruto has canceled all his public rallies across the country in response to an order by his boss Uhuru Kenyatta on political gatherings.

The DP, known for his endless political gatherings that attracts huge crowds, said the action he has taken is indefinite.

“The COVID-19 infection rates have become a serious source of concern making it necessary for GoK to take remedial measures to manage and contain the pandemic,” he said.

Uhuru Kenyatta today announced a new set of containment measures in the face of record-high COVID-19 infection rates in the country.

Besides restriction on the number of funeral attendees, the president put a ban on all political gatherings for the next 30 days.

It is worth noting that politicians have been on the forefront in ignoring the ban on public gatherings before- holding huge rallies across the country which no doubt expose many to the deadly virus.

ODM leader Raila Odinga was on Thursday, March 11 tested positive for the virus, a few days after completing several BBI rallies in Mombasa and Malindi.

Prior to cancelling his political engagements, William Ruto was in Busia County where he issued motorbikes to several boda boda groups.

The World Health Organisation on January 2021 said a new variant of COVID-19, which was first reported in South Africa was spreading fast in the continent.

The new variant was initially reported in the United Kingdom before finding its way to South Africa and is said to be more deadly than the initial strain.
