Deputy President William Ruto has expressed confidence that all 47 governors in Kenya support his 2022 presidential bid.
Speaking in an interview on Meru stations, Ruto said that the county bosses are waiting for the opportune moment to publicly support his presidential bid.
The second in command argued that the governors will come out to support him publicly next year as they fear being prosecuted if they join Ruto now.
“Governors are saying that they support me, but they fear the system, deep state. All governors, just wait for next year, you will see things you have never see.
The number of people who will be joining us… you will be shocked. The only reason they are not joining us today is that they have been told if they join William Ruto today, they will be arrested tomorrow,” he said.
The latest Governor to join William Ruto’s camp is Kirinyaga’s Anne Waiguru, who was officially welcomed to UDA Party on October 26.
Days after joining William Ruto’s camp reports emerged that the DPP is planning to arrest Anne Waiguru for corruption charges.
This sparked uproar from Waiguru and allies of William Ruto who accused the government agencies of witch-hunting her for joining UDA.
“Surely, barely 48 hours after we decamped to UDA and now this? As a believer in the rule of law this is unfortunate. It’s intention is to dissuade those contemplating the same and an attempt at engineering succession politics. It won’t work. Kenyans are not stupid. There is God in heaven,” she stated.
Other governors have shied away from supporting William Ruto apart from those who hail from Rift Valley.
Some of the county bosses who are known to be William Ruto’s supporters include; Josephat Nanok(Turkana) , Anne Waiguru(Kirinyaga) Hillary Barchok(Bomet) Okoth Obado(Migori), Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu) and Paul Chepkwony(Kericho).
