William Ruto: Covid-19 billionaires escaped because they were Raila’s friends

The fight against runaway corruption is among key pledges by the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga ahead of the August General Election.

The former prime minister is on record saying his government will jail those who have looted government resources if he secures victory in the forthcoming presidential elections.

At some point, the ODM leader accused his competitor, William Ruto, of looting government funds and dishing it out in the form of church donations.

But as the debate on the war against corruption continues, the United Democratic Alliance presidential flag bearer William Ruto has cast doubt on the ability of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition team to effectively fight corruption.

Speaking on Thursday, June 2, during a meeting with European Union ambassadors and heads of missions, DP Ruto said people who allegedly swindled the funds meant to help in the fight against Covid-19 were never arrested because they were friends with people promising to fight corruption, that is Raila Odinga.

“The Covid billionaires escaped because they were friends of the people who said they wanted to fight corruption. If the fight against corruption was left to institutions, the Covid billionaires would be behind bars by now,” Ruto said.

According to the former Eldoret North MP, the fight against corruption has been designed to protect those close to power and their associates.

“We believe that the fight against corruption must be institutionalized and not personalized. It must be a fight against criminals from all shades, it must not be weaponized against your political opponent and the people you don’t like while protecting the corrupt who are your allies or friends or members of your family.” Ruto added.

Since the KEMSA scandal surfaced there have been calls to prosecute public officials who dished out renders to mysterious entities.

Speaking last month Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria in a speech dubbed ‘Kwani ni Kesho’ dared Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua to push for the jailing of corrupt individuals in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration instead of waiting until after the election.
“Yesterday I heard other people say that their first agenda will be to send people to jail, all our projects stuck in the name of fighting corruption…My friend Raila and Karua, Who do not know the Kemsa thieves, arrest them today and send them to Kamiti, don’t wait for tomorrow” Kuria said.
