William Ruto hints at ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga getting UDA ticket

by Enock Ndayala

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto suggested former Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga could seek the Laikipia senatorial seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

During a campaign rally in Laikipia on Tuesday, December 7, the deputy president who in October accused Njenga of planning ethnic violence asked the crowd whether Maina Njega should join UDA.

“Will you give me a senator who understands the bottom-up approach? Should Maina Njenga be the UDA candidate?” Ruto posed to the residents who replied in the affirmative.

It is suspected that the deputy president sarcastically offered Maina Njenga a UDA ticket to cool down rowdy youths who were heckling him after he allegedly denied giving Maina a chance to address them.

The deputy president who was infuriated lashed at Njenga stating that he should lead his own rally if he wished to address the congregants but not in his (Ruto’s) rally.

“Plan your own meeting, stop this stupidity…I will not accept it. You have come to heckle us here? Listen to me; if you do not want orderliness,

“Please don’t come to heckle in my meeting. Everyone should organise his own meeting… this is mine,” William Ruto said amid commotion from the crowd.

But Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale has said William Ruto’s party is not ready to receive Maina to the UDA party.

Speaking during an interview with NTV on Tuesday, December 7, Duale said the UDA party would not want any association with a person such as Njenga who instigates violence.

“Maina Njenga and his militia Mungiki have no place in the legislature, they have no place in the politics and I want to see how the security agencies will deal with him after how he conducted himself today,” Duale said.
