William Ruto maintains the lead over Raila in race to State House

by Amos Khaemba
Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s ODM party has scoffed at those criticizing President William Ruto’s unending foreign trips.

Deputy President William Ruto is still ahead of ODM leader Raila Odinga in the presidential race according to the latest opinion polls from Radio Africa Group.

According to the polls, even though DP Ruto has consistently remained ahead of other aspirants, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has closed the gap.

As per the polls, 46.1 % of registered voters say they will vote for Ruto in the August 9 presidential election while 35.1% say they will vote for Raila Odinga.

According to the polls, Raila Odinga has made tremendous improvement, compared to his chances last year.

In July 2020, 42.7 % said they would for Ruto against 14.2 percent for Raila. In November, Railas’ numbers rose to 28.6 % while Ruto’s probability was at 45.6 %.

According to the poll done between January 5 and 15 2022, Ruto still maintains the lead in the Mt. Kenya region having 59.8 % support of Central Kenya whereas Raila has 25.1 % support.

Other strong bases for Ruto include Rift Valley where he enjoys 57.4%, Nairobi County 44.8%, Eastern 55.8%,

Ruto is trailing Raila in Nyanza, Coast, and Western regions with the support of 21.1%. 38.7%, 40.1% respectively.

Apart from his ‘bedroom’ Nyanza region where he commands 66.1 % support, Raila also leads Ruto in Coast and Western counties with 42.3% and 40.2% respectively.

For Raila to dethrone Ruto, he needs to improve in his weakest areas such as Rift Valley, Central, and Eastern where he commands minimal support of 24.9%, 25.1%, and 25.6% respectively.

According to the polls, no contestants will win the election in the first round if it was held today.

OKA trailing William Ruto

UDA still remains the popular party at 34%, followed closely by ODM with 26%, and Jubilee has 9%.

According to the polls, other potential presidential candidates are far behind the leading two.

Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, Gideon Moi, Alfred Mutua, and all others have the support of 2.4%, 1.4%, 0.8%,0.8%, and 0.9% respectively.

The lack of a presidential candidate could be the reason behind OKA’s poor performance in the pool.

The Radion Africa Group polls were carried through computer-aided telephone interviews among 3,152 respondents.
