Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto has branded former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a state project as their rivalry intensifies ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Speaking in Lamu County on Tuesday, October 19, the deputy president accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of imposing Raila Odinga on Kenyans.

Ruto who spoke on the final day of his Coastal tour declared that he was ready to battle it out with the state-sponsored project (Raila Odinga) in what he says would be a resounding victory for the hustler movement.

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto has branded former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a state-sponsored project as the 2022 race to State House heats up.

The former Agriculture Minister further protested President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move to back his handshake partner and accused the Jubilee government of picking an outsider as its 2022 presidential candidate of choice.

“We cannot allow few people to meet in a boardroom and hire a presidential candidate from the opposition to impose a state-sponsored project on eight million Kenyans who woke up early to form the Jubilee government,” William Ruto said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta whose relationship with his deputy has been shaky especially in their second term appears to be leaning towards Raila Odinga to hand over instruments of power when he retires in August 2022.

While the Head of State said the decision to pick the next president lies with electorates, Uhuru said he would only give directions to Kenyans on whom he thinks will be the best to lead the country in the next five years.

Uhuru further asked the opposition chief Raila Odinga to unite with One Kenya Alliance principals Gideon Moi, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetang’ula, and Kalonzo Musyoka and assured them that Ruto would easily win if they fail to work together.

“I cannot support you if you are not united. From the poll, if you do not unite, Ruto will even get 50+1 without the need for a second round,

“From where I sit, the best chance you have to win is to support Raila. He seems to have a realistic chance, but only with your support,” President Uhuru said during a meeting with opposition leaders at State House in Mombasa.
