William Ruto promises to be one-term president

In September 2022, President William Ruto appointed his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta as his peace envoy for the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa.

Deputy President William Ruto has sensationally claimed that he will not seek another term should he win the August 9, presidential elections.

Speaking on Monday, February 14, during the second phase of consultative engagements in Nyeri County, Ruto said he is no longer interested in serving the people of Kenya for 10 years as per the agreement he had with outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013.

“However, I don’t want 10 years now, I want us to agree on a five-year plan. If successful, add five more. If I fail, let us get a new person as a president,” William Ruto said.

The former Agriculture Minister who is seeking to be President Uhuru’s heir stated that he will renounce a second term if he fails to keep his first-term promises.

The presidential hopeful has promised to resuscitate the country’s economy, create employment for the youths, and to empower small-scale business owners through his bottom-up economic model.

However, United States-based Kenyan lawyer and activist Makau Mutua has sensationally claimed that Deputy President William Ruto could abolish presidential term limits if elected the next president.

Mutua an ardent supporter of ODM leader Raila Odinga opined that it will be so hard for the 55-year-old to only rule for five years adding that the deputy president would create a deeply corrupt one-man dictatorship.

“Rogue DP William Ruto begs Kenyans to give him only 5 years, not 10.  Why would he ask for two terms (10 years) when we know that if elected he plans to amend the constitution to remove term limits.  The dude is something else!” Mutua said in a Tweet.
