William Ruto takes on Raila Odinga for insulting hustlers

by Nderi Caren

Deputy President William Ruto has criticized ODM leader Raila Odinga for insulting hustlers.

Speaking during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Kiambu on August 13, Ruto argued that the country’s economy is dependent on small income earners, hence they deserve respect.

According to the DP, leaders are finding it hard to accept that economic discussions are gaining momentum, so they turn to insulting hustlers.

“They are used to talking about leaders, positions, power and the change of the Constitution. That is why they are now engaging in abusing Hustlers,” the Deputy President said.

The Deputy President was responding to a statement to ODM leader Raila Odinga, who termed his hustler nation politics as Takataka(garbage).

The words said by the former Prime Minister have been interpreted by his allies as a direct abuse to the huslters.

During a meeting with businessmen from Mt Kenya region on Thursday, he dismissed Ruto’s economic approach that aims at uplifting small traders.

“A bigger agenda, than somebody coming here and telling you Mama mboga.. mkokoteni.. wheelbarrow..hiyo ni takataka,” Raila Odinga said.

The words of Raila Odinga also attracted uproar from Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.

Raila Odinga and DP Ruto have for a long time been exchanging barbs over the bottom-up economic model and empowering of small businessmen.

On his part, the ODM leader has challenged Ruto for advocating for economic reforms yet he is part of those who have plundered the economy.

While Raila Odinga dismisses DP Ruto’s economic model, the latter accuses him of pushing tribal agendas and intention to create positions for himself through the Building Bridges Initiative.

“Today we are discussing matters economy. That at least we are not engaged in an exercise to create positions for leaders but passionate engagement to see how we can create jobs for Kenyans,” Ruto said.
