William Ruto’s battle over UDA ownership

by Nderi Caren

DP William Ruto is starring at a battle over for the control of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party he has openly said he may use to vie for the presidency in 2022.

The party’s former chairman Mohamed Abdi Noor has moved to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal seeking to take (UDA) ownership from the DP’s allies.

Mohamed Abdi Noor has accused former senators Johnstone Muthama, Boni Khalwale, and Secretary-General Veronica Maina of illegally taking over UDA leadership contrary to its constitution.

The battle over UDA ownership comes at a time when the party has made strides in terms of having representatives in parliament and growing membership.

“I am aware on my own knowledge that the Registrar of Political Parties unlawfully made changes to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) officials through Gazette Notice No. 1233 dated January 29, 2021, and 2739 published on March 19, 2021,” Noor said in a sworn affidavit seen by the People daily.

Mohamed Abdi Noor wants the Registrar of Political Parties to reinstate him as UDA chairman, a position that is currently held by Johnson Muthama.

While logging the complaints, the former chairman said that suspended secretary-general Mohamed Sahal called for a meeting on December 11, 2020, only for the current leaders to illegally take over.

Muthama, Khalwale, and Veronica Maina have been the most active officials of UDA, with DP William Ruto acting in the background.

The battle over UDA ownership comes at a time when the party has made strides in terms of having pulled in current MPs and senators.

The party has also seen its political profile rise so fast, especially after rebranding and being associated with deputy president Willliam Ruto.

Within a short period in the political space, the UDA party has managed to win by-elections including the Kiambaa constituency, Rurii ward, and London ward.

In terms of growing its membership, UDA, under the wings of Ruto and close allies has been able to register close to 2.8 million members by June 20, 2021.

There is no doubt that the UDA ownership is being contested at a time when the political outfit has captured the Mt. Kenya region.

This was seen recently during the Kiambaa by-elections held on July 15. UDA’s John Njuguna’s win has been seen as a big threat to the Jubilee party.
