William Ruto’s perceived endorsements splits UDA politicians

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politicians are split over a perceived endorsement of certain members of Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

On Tuesday, September 7, Ruto held a meeting with grassroots leaders at his Karen residence, where he endorsed some of his die-hard fans for top seats in the 2022 General Elections.

He endorsed Senator Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a Governorship), Susan Kihika (Nakuru Governorship) and Edward Muriu (Gatanga MP).

This ‘endorsement by William Ruto has sparked fear among a section of politicians, allied to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The politicians have raised concerns that the party’s primaries will not be conducted in a fair manner since DP William Ruto has already proven to have his favorite leaders.

However, United Democratic Alliance(UDA) Secretary General Veronica Maina has dismissed the thoughts that Ruto has his favorites.

“He was simply commending the leaders for the work that they are doing,” Veronica told the Daily Nation.

The split in UDA follows a move by a number of its supporters from Mt Kenya to leave the party on the fear that DP Ruto will give direct tickets to contestants.

“We find this unacceptable, undemocratic subverting the will of UDA supporters. We are equally concerned that such a move is only perpetrated in the Mt Kenya region,” the group chairman Kahio Ngomo said.

Before his perceived endorsement, DP Ruto had promised UDA politicians that various flagbearers in the 2022 General Election will be determined by voters.

“You do not need to be known by William Ruto. You do not need to be known by any person. Only voters are important because they are the ones who will determine who is better than the other,” he said.

In the past, Veronica Maina said that the party will not give any candidate a direct ticket, and even Ruto himself will go through nominations for the presidential seat.
