Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential bid has been dealt a major blow after Uasin Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar officially joined Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja.

Kamar, who is William Ruto’s home senator, was officially received on Thursday, January 27, by ODM leader Raila Odinga at Chungwa house in Nairobi.

The Senator led other political heavyweights from William Ruto’s turf of the Rift Valley region to support former prime minister Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

Kamar’s delegation included former Cabinet Minister and powerful head of public service Sally Kosgey, former Aldai MP Sally Kosgey, and Gender CAS Linah Chebii Kilimo.

Also present was former Inspector of Police David Kimaiyo who unsuccessfully ran for Elgeyo Marakwet senator in the 2017 General Election which he lost to incumbent Kipchumba Murkomen.

Their joining Azimio la Umoja comes after a silent campaign had been mounted by the former strongmen in late President Daniel Arap Moi’s government to loosen the deputy president hold in the vote-rich Rift Valley region.

This comes barely hours after Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the controversial Political Parties Bill of 2021 into law paving way for the opposition chief to bring onboard as many partners as possible and create a Narc-like super coalition which is expected to give William Ruto a run for his money.

The head of state signed the bill into law at the State House, Nairobi when Deputy Chief of Staff Njee Muturi presented it to him on Thursday, January 27.

The Bill which had been approved by the Senate on the night of Wednesday, January 26, after President Uhuru and Raila Odinga’s allies, trounced Deputy President William Ruto‘s allies in voting for the Bill further introduced the concept of coalition political parties.
