Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement has finally opted out of the National Super Alliance (NASA) to join One Kenya Alliance.
The party has followed in the footsteps of the Amani National Congress party which also withdrew from NASA recently citing irreconcilable differences with its main partner ODM.
In a press address on Monday, July 26, Wiper Democratic Movement leader, Kalonzo Musyoka said the party’s National Executive Committee has ratified the decision to quit NASA.
“We had a very useful engagement as the Wiper Democratic Movement and reached an agreement to exit NASA to welcome a new formidable coalition- One Kenya Alliance,
“…In making this decision, we have no hard feelings (against ODM, the main coalition partner),” said Kalonzo Musyoka.
The former vice president added that NASA, just like Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) in the 2013 General Election, has served its purpose and it was time for a new coalition.
The move leaves the now moribund NASA coalition with ODM, FORD-Kenya, and Isaac Ruto’s Chama Cha Mashinani party.
The next step is to officially notify the registrar of political parties of the decision, paving the way for Wiper Democratic Movement to enter a preelection pact with another coalition.
Moses Wetangula’s FORD Kenya cannot technically exit NASA at the moment as the party has a pending court case over bonafide party officials who can effect such a move.
The NASA constitution however states that the coalition will be deemed dead only if three of the founding parties formally vote to exit.
Analysts thus observe Wiper Democratic Movement and Amani National Congress will need to convince Isaac Ruto to pull out of NASA and drive the last nail in the coalition’s coffin.
The two parties have already made it clear they will link up with KANU’s Gideon Moi to form One Kenya Alliance (OKA) with which one of them shall vie for the presidency in 2022.
Both Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka have said they would not support a Raila Odinga presidency again and are better off vying for the seat instead.
