Wiper party officials demand Kalonzo reunites with Raila Odinga

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused his supporters of not turning out in large numbers during the anti-government protests called by the opposition.

Wiper Party has asked its leader Kalonzo Musyoka to consider reuniting with Azimio la Umoja –One Kenya coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga ahead of the August 9, General Election.

On Monday, May 16, the former vice president pulled out of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition after missing out on the coalition’s party running mate slot.

Kalonzo told journalists that he decided to jump ship after being shortchanged in the Azimio alliance where he hoped to be picked as Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate.

“My brother Raila knows I am naming my running mate. He came to my house to try and convince me to accept his choice. We did not agree and he said he would choose Martha and I told him I would choose my own running mate,” he said.

However, speaking in Stoni Athi Resort, Machakos County on Monday, May 23, Wiper-Kenya party organizing Secretary Robert Mbui said that they feel safe in the Azimio la Umoja.

Mbui who was speaking after a leadership meeting that brought together over 500 aspirants said there was still an avenue for discussions with Azimio.

“We want to be part of the new Kenya going forward but we need structured discussions as what is being offered is only in the media. We want Azimio to know that the issue is about Wiper as a party and not Kalonzo as people have made it to be,” he said.

This comes even as Kalonzo has already presented signatures of voters backing his presidential bid to the independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

While presenting the signatures at the Bomas of Kenya, Kalonzo’s running mate Sunkuli affirmed that the Wiper leader would be on the ballot as a presidential candidate.

“Yes, we are on the ballot and that is why I am here to represent my presidential candidate who is outside the country on a private trip,” Sunkuli said.
