William Ruto’s ally says Uhuru would still have divorced Ruto even without handshake

Deputy President William Ruto’s close ally and former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter has sensationally claimed President Uhuru Kenyatta would still have divorced William Ruto even without the handshake.

In an exclusive interview with KTN News on Friday, February 11, Keter alluded that the handshake between President Uhuru and ODM leader Raila played a minimal role in the fallout between Uhuru and Ruto.

“When the handshake happened, the relationship deteriorated and that is why it has been attributed to the handshake. Otherwise, if there was no handshake, maybe it could have happened still,” Keter said.

The former cabinet secretary observed that the handshake only worsened the already problematic relationship between the president and his deputy.

“Maybe it could have not happened to this magnitude. You know when things happen, you try to see what has changed in the environment. Neither the President nor the DP has said it is because of the handshake,” he added.

Keter was quick to commend the two leaders saying their fallout did not interfere with the running of the government.

Deputy President William Ruto and his allies have previously labeled the March 2018 handshake between Uhuru and Raila as the basis of their fallout.

However, Keter stated that his former boss, Uhuru, and close ally, Ruto have never disclosed what happened to their relationship to him despite his efforts to inquire on the same.

Since the handshake, President Uhuru and his deputy have not been reading from the same script especially on matters of national interest.

The Deputy President has been at the forefront in opposing any initiates by the president that has anything to do with the handshake, the most recent being the constitutional amendment initiative.

The fallout between the two has led to President Uhuru throwing his weight behind ODM leader Raila Odinga in the coming August 9, presidential elections.
