Ezekiel Mutua: Degree or no degree, Johson Sakaja is brilliant politician

by Enock Ndayala

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has in the recent past been the talk of the town over the controversy surrounding his degree certificate.

As of Monday, June 13, at least four petitions had been filed seeking to bar the Nairobi gubernatorial candidate from vying.

This was despite the fact the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had cleared the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politicians to vie for the city’s top seat.

However, the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Chief Executive Officer, Ezekiel Mutua argued that Sakaja is a brilliant politician regardless of whether he holds a degree or not.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, June 12, Mutua termed as a ‘waste’ of time the move by IEBC to interrogate Sakaja’s degree.

“He (Sakaja) is a man of his intellectual depth, rigour, and eloquence of speech, a guy who has pulled himself by his bootstraps to rise from the abyss to get to the top, to epitomise the best of our youth, shouldn’t be subject to this useless (degree) debate,” Mutua said.

The former Kenya Film Classification Board CEO further argued that people should not use a degree paper to gauge someone’s leadership abilities but should gauge people on how they use their brains and talents to lead and to give meaningful contributions to national development.

“Sakaja represents the best of our youth not just in Kenya but in Africa. He can debate any politician anywhere in the world. He’s smart, confident, suave, brave, and eloquent,

“He could have been out there with the crowds complaining about life, but he dared to dream and pushed his way to sit with the kings. To try to bring him down because of a degree is to be petty on another level,” Ezekiel Mutua said.

Last week, Sakaja failed to name even a single person he studied with at the University of Nairobi (UoN) raising more questions about his qualifications.
