Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor leaves office days after President Uhuru vowed to deal with him

Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina has been suspended days after President Uhuru Kenyatta indirectly warned him and the University council of dire consequences.

University Education Principal Secretary Simon Nabukwesi said Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Waceke Wanjohi would be the Acting VC for the next 30 days.

Nabukwesi said that Wainaina will be under investigation for the next 30 days on allegations of misconduct adding that he will get back his job if the investigations find that he has no case to answer.

“If investigations find that he has no questions to answer, he will take back his job,” said Nabukwesi.

His suspension comes just days after President Uhuru Kenyatta castigated the university management for opposing plans to cede part of the learning institution’s land to the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO is intending to set up a KSh 600 million emergency hub to cater to its regional operations.

“We have individuals who are very ignorant and behave as if they have never entered a classroom… they don’t understand that Kenya has never operated in isolation. We shall deal with those individuals swiftly and very effectively,” President Uhuru said while referring to the VC.

The land matter has been a subject of a row between the State and university after the institution refused to hand over the land.

On Tuesday, July 12, the VC called an emergency meeting of the university staff and revealed in total, that the State has asked them to cede 310 acres, and they have refused.

The Vice-Chancellor, who fought back tears during his address, also said that was probably his last address as the university’s vice-chancellor.

“This is probably the last time I am talking to you as VC. I understand a new council is being formed,” he said amid tears.
