Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has announced plans to contest for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General election.

During a YouTube podcast show dubbed ‘Convo Unscripted,’ the controversial politician said he has all the required qualities to be the Nairobi governor.

The outspoken legislator further claimed that none of the leaders in the capital city was better than him.

“Look at the National Assembly now, look at Governors, look at Senators, look at Woman Reps and MCAs….is there anybody better than Babu Owino there? I’m not bragging, just tell me,” Babu said.

While exuding confidence in barging into the coveted seat, the ODM MP claimed that Governor Johnson Sakaja was simply a “placeholder” who was warming up the seat for him.

“Definitely. That I can tell you, 101%. He (Sakaja) is a placeholder…Sakaja has been put there to clean the way for me,” Babu added.

Those who had shown interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial seat include business mogul Polycarp Igathe and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi among others.

Owino, who has been an ardent supporter of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga will have to battle it out with MP Tim Wanyonyi for the ODM party ticket.

It is understood that the ODM party was to give Wanyonyi a direct ticket but the handshake between Raila and now retired President Uhuru Kenyatta complicated the matter for the Westlands MP that saw Polycarp Igathe of Jubilee handed Azimio ticket.

Owino’s declaration to contest for the seat comes just a day after he was acquitted in the case where he was charged in relation to the shooting of Felix Orinda, popularly known as Dj Evolve.

Trial Magistrate Bernard Ochoi while acquitting the MP ruled that the prosecution failed to adduce enough evidence against the lawmaker.

“Having evaluated the evidence … I find that the prosecution has failed to prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt,” the court ruled.
