Mt Kenya spokesperson criticises President Uhuru’s family for hiding wealth abroad

Martha Karua, who was recently elected as the Mt Kenya spokesperson has criticised President Uhuru over an expose that his family has hidden massive wealth abroad.

According to Martha Karua, such an action from a Head of State is unwanted as it inhibits the economic growth of a country.

“A leader especially a third world leader who stashes money abroad knowingly undermines the economic growth of his country,” the Mt Kenya spokesperson wrote in a tweet.

Martha Karua’s sentiments comes after an expose on the Pandora Papers that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family has secret accounts in Panama and other financial heavens.

The expose has attracted uproar from politicians in the country with Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei terming it an act of immorality.

During a TV interview on October 4, Shollei argued that Uhuru should have invested the money in Kenya instead of letting it lay idle in overseas accounts.

“It may be legal but it is immoral… you cannot be leading a country that is suffering economically when you yourself are taking your wealth out of the country especially when a lot of the wealth was made within this country,” Shollei argued.

In addition, ODM leader Raila Odinga called on investigations into the expose in order to ensure accountability from government officials such as President Uhuru.

“I am optimistic that the truth on Pandora Papers will come out. (President) Uhuru has already welcomed the findings, and is ready to comprehensively address the matter when he returns to Kenya from his foreign trip,” he said.

In an interview on October 6, Raila revealed that he was approached with a similar offer while he was the Country’s Prime Minister.

“I have been in Government, and I know there are many temptations that come with being a senior State official.

“A businessman would approach you, and tell you: ‘look, do this favour for me, and I would give you funds that you can store in secret accounts,” Raila shared.
