The Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has unexpectedly released the secretive NASA deal and asked the ODM leader Raila Odinga to honor it ahead of the August General Elections.
Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Tuesday, March 1, Kalonzo revealed the ODM leader had signed an agreement that required him to support the Wiper leader in the 2022 polls.
The former vice president pointed out that he was forced to release the document after the ODM leader was endorsed to vie for the presidency in the August election by his party, a move Kalonzo says was in breach of their agreement.
“By accepting nomination by the ODM to run as a presidential candidate for the 5th time, I believe my brother Raila has committed an irreparable material breach of this agreement,” Kalonzo said.
According to the document released by Kalonzo and seen by Kivumbi.co.ke, the former prime minister agreed to support Kalonzo Musyoka’s candidature in 2022 polls irrespective of the 2017 election outcome.
“By this agreement, the parties agree that principal H (Raila Odinga) will be NASA’s presidential nominee and that principal Q (Kalonzo Musyoka) will be his running mate. this agreement will remain valid until the 2022elections whether or not NASA wins the 2017 presidential elections,” Reads part of the agreement.
According to the agreement, the ODM leader was supposed to serve only for one term then pass over the mantle to the Wiper leader.
“Principal H agrees in a public MOU to serve one term and publicly endorse principal Q as the presidential candidate for 2022,” the document states.
Another interesting aspect of the NASA deal is that Raila Odinga would have delegated more duties to Kalonzo while he concentrates on international matters.
“Principal H agrees that after three years in the presidency, he shall delegate substantial national duties to principal Q and largely concentrate on international duties,” the agreement states.
The Wiper leader challenged Raila to honor their agreement saying it’s the only way for the former prime minister to redeem himself as a true democrat.
“My brother has the option of abiding by the terms of this live binding, legal agreement, and thereby emerging as a true, national, regional, and indeed continental democratic hero or he chooses to act defiance and repudiation of the agreement,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader further said that he is ready to work with the ODM leader so long as the NASA documents form part of their discussion.
“As I already publicly stated, I am ready to work with him again under the three pillars, Grand coalition government, for the sake of our great nation. I urge that as we engage in fresh negotiations this document forms the basis for such negotiation,” Kalonzo added.
