by Enock Ndayala

Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok has claimed that detectives from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) department stole KSh 286 million from him during the protests.

The Orange Democratic Alliance (ODM) lawmaker alleged that John Kuria and Andrew Kuria both attached to the DCI Headquarters Serious Crime Unit stole the money from a safe at Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi.

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki heard that the claimant had gone to the eatery to hide together with other Azimio leaders after learning that they were being wanted for engaging in subversive activities during protests.

Imwatok, through lawyer Shadrack Wambui told the court that the duo stole the money after arresting the politician from his hideout.

The Daily Nation on Wednesday, August 9, reported that the lawyer had applied to have the two officers summoned to court to present all the items they took from his client when they nabbed him.

However, the two officers did not appear in court but instead sent another officer Gilbert Okwemwa with two phones without the cash.

“I confirm the only thing that is in the inventory is only the phones and nothing else. The KSh 286 million was not handed to me by the two arresting officers,” Okemwa told the court.

The court further heard that an employee attached to the eatery who saw the two officers picking the money has since been killed under unclear circumstances.

Others who lost their money include Ngei MCA Redson Otieno Onyango (KSh 1.8 million) and his Mabatini counterpart Wilfred Oluoch who lost KSh 3.2 million.

The new developments come just a day after the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome defended police conduct during the anti-government protests called by the opposition leader over the high cost of living.
