Raila Odinga wants supreme court to declare him president-elect

Last week, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati presented the president-elect certificate and gazetted William Ruto as the fifth President-elect.

According to the results announced by the presidential returning officer, Ruto garnered 7.1 million votes against Raila’s 6.9 million, a result he has already challenged at the Supreme Court.

But speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, August 24,  Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga has asked the Supreme Court to annul Chebukati’s verdict and declare him the fifth President-elect.

Raila , who was campaigning for the coalition’s Mombasa Gubernatorial race Abdulswamud Nassir, said he has enough evidence that he won the presidential elections held on Tuesday, August 9.

“We want the courts (Supreme Court) to make that declaration that we won the presidential elections because that is the truth. Instead of going back to the ballot, we should be announced as the winners so that we can be sworn in,” Raila said.

Raila’s running mate Martha Karua insisted that they were illegally robbed off their victory and urged their supporters to be optimistic that the court will rule in their favor because they have submitted enough evidence.

“We are hopeful the court will rule in our favor because we have substantial evidence. Let’s not be worried or give up. I’m happy you’ve not given up; you are strong, that’s what will give us the gubernatorial seat,” Karua said.

However, Raila and Karua failed to reveal the evidence they presented to the Supreme Court to prove that indeed he won the election and instead maintained that his lawyers will soon reveal the full details.

“We had foreigners who came to interfere with our elections. They came to oversee schemes but I can tell you everything will come out. We are asking Kenyans to be patient. Our lawyers will reveal what happened,” Raila said.

Some of the affidavits presented by Raila’s legal team to challenge Ruto’s presidential win however show that the UDA leader won the presidency but did not garner the constitutionally required 50+1% to be declared the winner.
