Chebukati: Kenya’s 2022 elections were the most free

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Committee (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati was on Thursday, September 28, expected to appear before the National Dialogue Committee.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has maintained that the 2022 presidential elections were the most free.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 24, 2023, Chebukati said that Kenya has never had the freest and fairest General Election like the one held in August 2022.

“In August 2022, Kenya held the freest, fairest, and most credible election in its history. I recently presented a paper titled Role of Technology in Improving the Integrity of the Electoral Process in Kenya This video introduces the last mile test as key to achieving this feat,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati insisted that almost all Presidential results forms from all polling stations were electronically transmitted to the public portal within 24 hours.

“99.9% of Presidential result forms were electronically transmitted to the public portal within 24 hours of closure of polls,” he said.

Adding that “We processed and transmitted these results in a quick and speedy manner. The tally results were available to stakeholders and the public to view. We worked very well with the telecommunications service providers and in a few areas where there was no network we had to bring in satellite modems.”

However, Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential running mate Martha Karua in a quick rejoinder challenged Chebukati to open the servers to ascertain that the servers were not tempered.

“Let us confirm this through audit pursuant to Article 88 of the Constitution,” Karus said.

Chebukati declared President William Ruto the fifth president-elect after he polled 7.1 million votes against his closest challenger Raila Odi9nga who garnered 6.9 million votes.

However, the opposition still holds that the 2022 presidential election was rigged in favor of their competitor William Ruto.

Raila’s lawyer more than 40 polling locations were tampered with to increase William Ruto’s tally and tip it over the threshold of 50 percent plus one vote threshold required to win.
