Raila Odinga’s presidential bid could collapse with Kalonzo threatening to leave

At least four parties under the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) have threatened to ditch ODM leader Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja coalition.

In a letter dated Monday, April 11, the caucus asked the registrar of political parties Anne Nderitu to stop the registration of the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition political party.

In the letter which was signed by Shakila Abdalla, the Wiper Secretary-General and his UDP counterpart, Bernard Wafukho Wiper Democratic Movement, Kenya African National Union (KANU), United Democratic Party (UDP), and The Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG), claimed the coalition agreement deposited with Nderitu on April 1 had been secretly altered irregularly.

“It is apparent that the Agreement lodged on the 1st April 2022 was withdrawn and certain clauses amended or altered without the consent of all the parties and signatories,” read the letter in part.

According to the letter, the original agreement had only three clauses affiliated to ODM, Jubilee, and One Kenya Alliance, respectively yet the amended agreement has four.

It also wants the issue of increment of the members of the coalition council under the coalition political party from the initial seven to eleven sorted.

The letter now complicates the already fractured relationships in Azimio which could puncture Raila Odinga’s presidential bid less than four months before the General Election.

This came just a day after the former prime minister convened a housekeeping Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya Alliance meeting at Cotu Secretary-general Francis Atwoli’s Ildamat home in Kajiado County.

The meeting was meant to discuss emerging issues in the coalition and also chart a way forward for that coalition ahead of the August 9, polls.

Atwoli, who hosted the meeting, said they discussed ways of ensuring the coalition is united post-party primaries
