Azimio MPs protest parliament move to invite CJ Martha Koome for their induction

Members of Parliament (MPs) allied to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party protested an invitation of Chief Justice Martha Koome to address the legislators.

Members of the 13th National Assembly on Monday, September 19, kicked off their one-week-long orientation at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.

The legislators led by Nyando MP Jared Okelo stated that the coalition party had no time for CJ Koome, noting that she had fallen short of upholding the constitution of Kenya.

The lawmaker stated that Koome’s presence would re-open a fresh wound she inflicted on the party and that they would walk out should she dare attend the event.

“We are dissatisfied that Parliament has invited the Chief Justice to come and make a presentation. The judgment that she rendered was full of insults and I do not think we deserved them,

“She does not interpret the law as it ought to be. We will respectfully walk away when she shows up to make that presentation,” Okelo said.

Okello poked holes in CJ Koome’s selection of words used in dismissing a presidential election petition filed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Using some of the words used by Supreme Court President Martha Koome, the lawmaker said that the CJ had nothing new to tell them terming her presence at the induction as “hot air.”

“Whatever she is bringing here today is full of hot air, an unproven hypothesis, red herring, and all the negative attributes that she described our petition with,” he jokingly said.

His comments were echoed by his Funyula counterpart Wilberforce Oundo who advised Koome to instead focus on redeeming the image of the Judiciary.

“We expect judges and people in the judiciary to be of good manner and temper so that whatever judgment they render is not full of innuendos. When she comes, or at whatever venue, has the time to redeem the image of the judiciary that respects the people of Kenya,” he said.
