Raila Odinga threatens US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman

by Enock Ndayala

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has asked US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman to desist from commenting on the country’s internal matters.

This was after the diplomat on Wednesday, August 16, said that the 2022 General Election was the most credible in Kenyan history.

“I arrived in Kenya days before the August 2022 General Election; what I witnessed was nothing short of remarkable. Kenya held, what many analysts and commentators say, was the free-est, fairest and most credible election in Kenyan history,” Whitman expressed.

However, speaking at the ongoing Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, the ODM boss described Whitman as a “rogue” ambassador accusing her of meddling in Kenyan affairs.

“The rogue Ambassador must be told that Kenya is not a colony of the United States of America. She must respect Kenyans or keep her mouth shut,” Raila said.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader threatened to push for the recalling of the US ambassador if she continues meddling in the country’s internal affairs.

“We want to tell the rogue ambassador to leave Kenyans alone. If maandamano can lead to dialogue between Kalonzo and Ichungwah then everything is good with demonstrations,

“Tell the rogue ambassador that Kenya is not the United States and Kenya is not a colony of the United States. Keep your mouth shut when you are here otherwise, we will call for your recall,” he added.

Earlier, a section of senators allied to Raila Odinga’s political faction had dismissed US Ambassador Meg Whitman for hailing the country’s democracy in the 2022 General Election.

The leaders who were led by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and his Kitui counterpart Enoch Wambua while addressing the media termed the remarks as “insensitive”.

“It was too insensitive for the US ambassador to talk about democracy in Kenya when this regime has actually criminalized legitimate rights of Kenyan people. To picket, demonstrate and assemble,” Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga said.
